Later in the night, with the morning light barely beginning to crack the sky, I’m rudely thrown awake by being thrown out of my bed. I shake my head feeling disoriented as I get up from the floor. The boat rocks again and I grab onto my dresser to steady myself. I walk down the hall and find Daniel putting on a life vest.

Surely it isn’t that serious. We have weathered tropical storms before. I step onto the lower deck to get a better sense of our situation.

Waves wash over the lower deck as the boat rocks side to side. Lightning cracks across the sky and rain pelts my body as I scramble to catch myself before I go sliding overboard.

Everything happens quickly. The storm rages around us. The ocean water battering the vessel relentlessly. I grab the railing as lightning cracks again. My father is shouting at me to get inside and the engine dies. Rachel is standing next to my father and all I can do is stare at her. The wind blows her red hair around wildly. Whipping around her face as the heavens cry all around us.

Her eyes are on me when she shouts for me. “Lucas!” her arm stretches out reaching for me and I hate the terror frozen over her beautiful face.

I take her in my arms, hoping to erase the look of terror on her face.

“It will be alright, princess. It will be alright,” I promise her, my lips against her ear.

I pray like hell that I’m telling her the truth, but when the ship begins taking on water, and I see the bleakness in my father’s eyes, even I have doubts.

Everything is a blur as we get into the life raft, Rachel close to me. The water tosses us relentlessly as my father and I fight to keep from sinking. Daniel and the crew are on a different raft, but the weather is so crazy I can barely see them.

“Daniel!” Rachel screams, as I’m trying to empty the water that is starting to gather in our raft.

Have we got a leak? Or is it from the rain? There’s so much water.

I turn to look at her, hearing the terror in her voice and then…

Blackness engulfs me.

When I wake, my head is pounding, and the sun glares in my eyes, causing pain to shoot through my head and making me wince. Memories of what happened, come rushing back to me. The storm, the boat going down, struggling to get everyone on the raft. We hit a rock and then everything is a blur. I struggle to get to my feet and look around. My dad appears to be a few feet away. I scan the beach and the rocks for Rachel and that’s when I see her bobbing in the water face down, unmoving.

Panic tears at me, but there is no time for that. I have to act now. She’s got to be okay. I was so terrible to her. I will never forgive myself if I can’t make that up.
